The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain “as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.” This definition implies two components of pain: the actual sensory experience that physically occurs in the body and what happens in the brain emotionally when perceiving that stimuli. The goal of pain management is to find the source of the signal that is being perceived, treat it and repair the damage if possible, or control the signals so that a person can function as normally as possible.
